World Cup Day 19 Lunchtime Update

The England team has touched down back home after their miserable World Cup campaign, but there’s still plenty of action to look forward to, with Paraguay v Japan and a cracker in prospect tonight as Spain face Portugal to finish off the Second Round matches.

Paraguay vs Japan – (2nd Round, Tuesday 3.00pm)

Paraguay vs Japan – (2nd Round, Tuesday 3.00pm)

Of all the 2nd round matches, this clash of Paraguay vs Japan is probably the toughest to assess with confidence & the only certainty is that it looks set to be a tight, competitive match.

In terms of who out of Paraguay or Japan will win this tie is very much a flip of the coin situation again as all three results look entirely possible and a good case can be put forward for either outcome so it’s a tough call to make.

Tactically it is a tough game to assess, Paraguay are a very solid team with great organisation & team play while Japan also have fantastic team spirit, energy & probably slightly more flair as well so it is going to be close.

The bookmakers have Paraguay as favourites for this, & while that is probably correct, what is not correct in our opinion in the disparity in the odds and so we are going to use the odds to make our decision for us & follow the value that lies with backing Japan.

Paraguay have looked solid, organised & hard to beat so they will certainly make it a real test for Japan but Japan were also very impressive against Denmark and so we feel the odds of 11/10 for Paraguay to win & 11/4 for Japan to win are wrong in our view and make Japan a stand out value bet in our opinion.

Admittedly a scoring draw was tempting but the price on a Japan win is the biggest of the three prices & that is the clincher for us and given what they have shown so far, we should get a good run for our money.

Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result: Japan to win
Correct Score options: Japan to win 2-0/2-1
First Goalscorer each way/Player to score anytime: Honda/Endo/Okazaki
Scorecast options: Honda/Endo/Okazaki score 1st & Japan win 2-0/2-1
Double result: Japan H/T & F/T

Spain vs Portugal – (2nd Round, Tuesday 7.30pm)

Spain vs Portugal – (2nd Round, Tuesday 7.30pm)

Now in theory, this clash of Spain vs Portugal should be a great game given the talent within both teams & the potential is definitely there for this to be the defining game of the tournament in terms of goals & flair but the reality could well be very different.

The truth is, Spain & Portugal will view this as a must not lose game & this could well develop into being a very tight, cagey affair with possession key alongside team organisation & defensive structure and that particularly applies to Portugal who have an excellent defensive record in the last few years.

We are not saying this will be a negative game because they players on show are too good for that, but the intense pressure of the situation could well mean the football played is more controlled, structured & not as free flowing as we would hope.

Spain always look to try to play positive, attacking football and we do expect them to take the game to Portugal & indeed Portugal have the capabilities to respond but given how Portugal have played in the last few years under Carlos Queiroz, then we expect Portugal to set up to be hard to beat first, flair second.

Portugal have hardly conceded any goals in the last few years & none so far at this World Cup, with the shut-out against Brazil showing they can do it against the very best so we again expect them to make it a real test for Spain to break through.

For those that believe Portugal have the capabilities to win the game then the odds of 10/3 are certainly tempting enough & indeed a scoring draw was also a very tempting option but if one player is going to unlock Portugal it could well be David Villa & we are taking him to inspire Spain to edge through this one.

Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result: Spain to win
Correct Score options: Spain to win 1-0/2-0
First Goalscorer each way/Player to score anytime: Villa/Iniesta/Silva
Scorecast options: Villa/Iniesta/Silva score 1st & Spain win 1-0/2-0
Double Result: DRAW H/T & SPAIN F/T

Capello blames tired players but wants to continue as England boss

Fabio Capello faced the world’s media today, less than 24 hours after England’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Germany. The Italian says FA chairman Sir Dave Richards has told him he’ll make a decision on the manager’s future in the next fortnight, whilst Capello bemoaned the players’ fitness for their poor showing. The squad is now on its way back to England, and are expected to land around 6am at Heathrow on Tuesday morning.

Terry offers no excuses for shambolic England performance

John Terry admits England just weren’t good enough after a woeful display in Bloemfontein saw them end a frankly disappointing campaign with their heaviest World Cup defeat, going down to Germany 4-1. Frank Lampard’s goal that wasn’t would have grabbed all the headlines but in fairness England were just far inferior to their younger opposition. The defending was abject, with mistakes you wouldn’t expect to see on a Sunday league pitch, whilst once again Wayne Rooney disappointed as he continued his barren run of 8 World Cup matches and no goals.
