Previews & Predictions for Premier League matches + League 1 & League 2 Play-Off Finals – weekend 18th & 19th May

It’s the final weekend of what has yet again been another fascinating, enthralling, at times unpredictable & mostly high quality season in the Premier League and here are my views on how I think the final matches might work out.

Obviously caution has to be noted when punting on the Premier League matches as only 2 of the matches, Newcastle United vs Arsenal & Tottenham vs Sunderland mean anything of note but there are still bets to be had & hopefully we can target the right ones.

To go with the finale in the Premier League, there are also the massively important League 1 & League 2 Play-Off Finals as Brentford, Yeovil, Bradford City & Northampton Town are all chasing their dreams of getting promotion and no doubt they will all be trying their hardest to achieve those dreams.

I’ve had a look at all the matches from the Premier League & the League 1 & League 2 Play-Off Finals and here are my views on them with the betting recommendations I believe are worth consideration:

Premier League previews & predictions: (all 4pm kick-offs on Sunday)

Newcastle United vs Arsenal:- Newcastle United have endured a largely nightmare season & come into this final match of the season having only secured Premier League safety by beating QPR last weekend & quite frankly the only emotion Newcastle United staff, players & fans will be feeling is relief & gratitude that they haven’t gone down.

For Arsenal this match represents one last, massive chance to realise their seasonal ambition of a top 4 place & Champions League football for next season and quite simply everybody at Arsenal knows that 3 points here will guarantee they finish in the top 4 & for Arsenal that will be job done again.

So clearly in terms of motivation & desire to win this match then it most definitely rests with Arsenal, they have to look to win this match, they’ve got the quality to win this match & will believe they can do it but the real, key question is can they handle the pressure & expectations on them to actually pull the win off.

My answer to that is I can’t recommend backing Arsenal at 8/15 to win this match, yes Arsenal have a clear edge in terms of player quality & will believe they can score goals but now the pressure is off Newcastle United I think they will be intent on finishing the season well in front of their own fans, showing real pride & I believe a scoring draw is the value call here, I know that won’t please anybody at Arsenal but I think it’s the bet to go with here.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: DRAW 1-1/2-2
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Cisse/Walcott/Cabaye

Tottenham vs Sunderland:- Tottenham’s Champions League hopes do not rest in their own hands & they know that even if they win it will not be good enough if Arsenal also win but nevertheless the fact Tottenham still have a chance to achieve a top 4 finish is commendable & I believe it is something they will actually achieve.

I say that because I believe Newcastle United will cause real problems for Arsenal & I’ve gone for the draw in that fixture, meaning that a Tottenham win against Sunderland will be enough for Spurs to reach the top 4 & I certainly do believe & fully expect that Tottenham will beat Sunderland here.

I actually believe Tottenham are worth backing to win this with something to spare because Sunderland have not been in very good form, they certainly don’t travel very well, they don’t look like scoring goals & now they are officially safe they have nothing left to play for so I just don’t see them offering anything here.

Admittedly Tottenham have let punters down on several occasions when strongly fancied & indeed long odds on to win but I seriously can’t envisage any other result here apart from a Tottenham win & I believe it’s worth backing the likes of Bale, Dempsey, Defoe, Adebayor, Lennon & the rest of Tottenham’s quality to show what they’ve got & win this in style, assuming they do I believe that will be enough for the top 4 place they’ve chased all season.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: TOTTENHAM to win 2-0/3-0
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Bale/Adebayor/Dempsey

Liverpool vs QPR:- Liverpool will win this with complete ease & may well absolutely rip QPR apart here, I fear for QPR’s goalkeeper & they may well need to replace the nets once Liverpool have done here.

Liverpool have been pretty impressive in recent weeks, creating & scoring goals for fun with Daniel Sturridge full of confidence & banging in the goals with the hugely impressive & talented Coutinho providing the tricks, flicks & high quality service into him and I just don’t see how QPR’s pathetic team & defence will cope with them.

Liverpool are 2/9 to win this & even that price looks good against QPR, indeed 1/9 would still represent value against Harry Redknapp’s pathetic excuse for a team & surely the only way to go here is to back Liverpool to finish the season on a high & hope they can go again next year.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: LIVERPOOL to win 3-0/4-0
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Sturridge/Coutinho/Borini

Manchester City vs Norwich city:- How many will Manchester City score here?? – I know that will sound incredibly dismissive of Norwich City but Chris Hughton’s side have achieved safety & that’s genuinely job done for them, not well done but done nonetheless and they’ve got nothing left to play for.

Of course neither have Manchester City with the title lost & 2nd place assured but I am expecting Manchester City’s high quality squad to look to finish the season on a high & as long as they take this seriously then I can see them winning this with ease & probably with a few goals as well.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: MANCHESTER CITY to win 3-0/4-0
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Aguero/Tevez/Silva

Southampton vs Stoke City:- When this season started, all that both Southampton & Stoke City wanted to achieve was Premier League safety, ideally comfortably as possible, admittedly it wasn’t comfortable but they’ve both done it & so it’s now time to relax & actually enjoy the football.

The fact neither side has anything but pride to play for obviously makes it a trappy betting heat as absolutely anything is possible although saying that I don’t really envisage Stoke City winning this as their away form is poor & they don’t score too many goals usually.

I was really tempted to go with a scoring draw here given that both sides can play with freedom but I think this is a great chance for Southampton to give the home fans some final day cheer & I believe it’s worth backing Southampton at a shade of odds on to win here.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: SOUTHAMPTON to win 2-1/3-1
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Lambert/Rodriguez/Lallana

Swansea City vs Fulham:- I’m looking forward to seeing how this match up of Capital One Cup winners Swansea & Fulham goes as it should be a good, open & entertaining football match with both teams having the pressure off & freedom to play.

Swansea have had a magnificent season with Michael Laudrup & the fact they won a trophy & secured european football for next year really does put them right up there amongst the top achievers in the Premier League.

Fulham on the other hand have largely had a season to forget as they’ve been very inconsistent & indeed very disappointing in a lot of their matches but they’ve got real quality in the likes of Berbatov & Ruiz and nobody quite knows what to expect from them in any given match.

I certainly don’t expect Swansea to lose this as Fulham’s away record is poor, Fulham are capable of getting a few goals & possibly edging a draw from this but I think this is another case where the home team have the most motivation for winning & indeed I believe Swansea are worth backing to give their fans one last win from what has been an incredible season for them.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: SWANSEA to win 2-0/2-1
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Michu/Dyer/Pablo Hernandez

West Brom vs Manchester United:- Without being disrespectful to West Brom, the entire focus of this match will be around the fact it is Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever match in charge of Manchester United & to be honest I think it’s all about Manchester United looking to win this in style & give Sir Alex the final send off he deserves.

Of course Steve Clarke will want his West Brom players to finish well & indeed respond to a truly horrific performance against Norwich were they lost 4-0 but I just can’t see how Steve Clarke will get his team to bounce back here with nothing to play for & I genuinely think this is a case of Manchester United showing what they can do & winning the game.

I’m expecting the game to be open, attack-minded & free flowing, there should be a few goals as there is no pressure on either side and so it should come down to which side shows the most quality in attack & that means the likes of Van Persie, Hernandez, Valencia, Giggs, Welbeck, Nani, Kagawa can show their quality, get the goals & give Sir Alex Ferguson a win in his 1500th & final match for Manchester United.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: MANCHESTER UNITED to win 3-0/3-1
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Van Persie/Hernandez/Giggs

Chelsea vs Everton:- Chelsea have secured a Champions League place for next season, they’ve secured Europa League glory so they’ve done their job while Everton have secured 6th place & finished above Liverpool, basically it’s a case of job done now for both sides & I’m expecting this to be a good, honest & open contest with the pressures & demands of the season finally released.

With Chelsea having had a season without the Champions League, then just getting back into it will feel likes enough, of course it’s not for a team of Chelsea’s stature & wealth but right now it will suffice & Rafa Benitez can at least send out the Chelsea players relaxed & just tell them to enjoy themselves here in his last game in charge.

The same of course also applies to David Moyes who takes charge of Everton for the last time before he moves on to Manchester United next season, he’ll want to finish on a high but more importantly he knows he’s done a great job, that the Everton players have done a great job & this really is a time to enjoy their football.

I must admit I’m seriously tempted by the 4/1 on offer for Everton to win this as they’ve always enjoyed a very good record against Chelsea & usually do particularly well in this fixture, although that’s usually via a hard fought, deserved score draw & that’s the way I’m going to here as Chelsea will be more than happy to get this long, hard season finished & Everton will be happy to finish with a positive result in David Moyes’s last game.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: DRAW 1-1/2-2
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Torres/Mirallas/Mata

West Ham United vs Reading:- I simply think this is a great opportunity for West Ham United to finish the season with a home win & get 3 points against a Reading side who are already thinking of the Championship next season.

Sam Allardyce can be proud of what he’s done at West Ham United this season, it’s not been high quality or spectularly entertaining but he’s done the job of keeping West Ham United safe & that’s certainly more than enough for everybody connected to West Ham United, they’ll want more in the coming years but right now it ranks as one of the achievements of the season in my book.

For Reading this season was always going to be very tough & most likely too tough, it’s proven to be that way & they’ve gone down, not without a fight mind & in Nigel Adkins they’ve got a manager who will have a seriously good go at getting them straight back up, but in terms of this match then I just don’t see Reading offering anything to worry West Ham.

Taking odds on in these pointless, meaningless end of season matches is not always the best policy but this time around I can’t see any reason to oppose West Ham against a poor Reading side who’ve already gone & so a West Ham United home win looks the call to me.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: WEST HAM UNITED to win 2-0/2-1
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Carroll/Nolan/Jarvis

Wigan vs Aston Villa:- When Wigan equalised against Arsenal to make it 1-1 & indeed looked like possibly going to get the win, then this fixture had the look of being a monumental, winner takes all relegation scrap but now Wigan are down it means absolutely nothing & it’s basically a game neither side want.

I’m not going to mess around talking about this match for too long because Wigan have been unpredictable all season when they had something to play for & I’ve got a feeling it will be worse now they don’t, I simply think that both teams will look to play the right way here, look to score goals & I think a spot of value lies in backing a scoring draw here.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: DRAW 1-1/2-2
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime options: Agbonlohar/Kone/Maloney

League 1 & League 2 Play-Off Final Match Previews:

League 1 Play-Off Final Preview – Brentford vs Yeovil Town:- To start with I want to say that I think it’s entirely fitting & totally deserved that Brentford & Yeovil are the two Play-off finalists as they finished 3rd & 4th respectively after 46 league games, finishing only 2 points apart & with their star strikers, namely Clayton Donaldson & Paddy Madden finishing top of the League 1 goalscoring charts.

It’s clear for all to see that the credentials of Brentford & Yeovil coming into this Play-Off Final are absolutely rock solid, they’ve both got talented squads, excellent managers & they’ve both shown that vital mix of quality, belief & sheer determination to win through to this final stage so this is undoubtedly a very tough call to make & it would not surprise me if this was a match that went the whole way to extra time & maybe even penalties.

I’ll admit that with those thoughts in mind & with all the facts in front of me, that is what the price for the draw in 90 minutes that was my first port of call & I have to say that the 9/4 for the draw is very tempting & certainly holds a lot of merit and many will be tempted by that given how close a call this looks.

With all of that taken on board & with maximum respect given to Gary Johnson & his Yeovil players, it’s Uwe Rosler’s BRENTFORD that I’m going to put my faith in here & I believe they are worth backing to get the win & seal promotion to finally erase those incredibly painful memories of being denied by a 97th penalty miss in their final league match of the season.

Now that incredibly dramatic, never seen before scenario that occurred in that breath-taking final league match against Doncaster Rovers & saw Brentford have certain promotion snatched from them in the dying seconds would have destroyed most teams & left them emotionally, mentally & physically defeated, but not Brentford & the incredible character they’ve shown to reach the final is the key for me.

Incredibly as though that match against Doncaster was not punishing enough, Brentford’s determination, character & courage was tested to the limit again in the Semi-Final 2nd leg when they let a 3-1 lead go & had to come through a penalty shoot-out to edge past Swindon.

The fact Brentford could do that after everything they’d already been through just makes me believe that no matter how this game works out during the 90 minutes, I do believe that BRENTFORD will be hard to beat, they’ll give absolutely everything once again & they’ll find a way to win it, I just believe BRENTFORD are worth backing to have the edge over Yeovil & win promotion to the Championship with maybe Clayton Donaldson the man to lead the way.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options: BRENTFORD to win 2-0/2-1
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime:- Donaldson/Forrester/Trotter

League 2 Play-Off Final Preview – Bradford City vs Northampton Town:- This League 2 final represents a different scenario to that of the League 1 final which sees the 3rd & 4th place finishing teams take each other on, here we have 6th place Northampton Town taking on 7th place Bradford City so clearly neither were the strongest sides in the regular League 2 season but it’s those two that have earned their place in a final which should prove a good one to watch.

I say that because both Bradford City & Northampton Town look to play football the right way, admittedly Bradford City are a more positively attacking side & have more creative flair than Northampton Town do but their desire to be positive & look to win the matches they play in are identical & this should be a game that entertains & hopefully provides a few goals to enjoy.

Betting wise the bookmakers have Bradford City as favourites for this at around 11/8 while Northampton are general 2/1 shots to win it in 90 minutes, now given that Northampton secured 4 more points than Bradford during the season then many will feel Northampton are a big price & indeed that 2/1 is not without merit given that in Rory O’Donovan & Luke Guttridge, Northampton have 2 strikers who can cause hassle & get the goals against any team at this level to win any type of match.

Northampton are tempting & so is the draw given I expect this to be a really competitive, open game of football but I believe the bookmakers have got the prices right as I make BRADFORD CITY deserving favourites to win this match & indeed they are my to call win it inside 90 minutes, although admittedly to win it outright might well be the safer play.

I’ve got to go with BRADFORD CITY here as they’ve impressed in huge matches against big sides such as Arsenal, Aston Villa & Wigan, indeed they got passed all of those to reach the Capital One Cup final at Wembley & although they lost the final 5-0, that experience of the big Wembley occasion may well just give the Bradford City players the edge here as it will help them to adapt easier to everything that goes on with a big day at Wembley.

I’m also going with Bradford City to win this because I feel they’ve got more attacking flair & ability in their side with the likes of 23 goal man Nakhi Wells & they can also call upon the likes of James Hanson, Gary Jones, Garry Thompson, Zavon Hines & Kyle Reid to provide the creativity & back-up goal threat that I think ultimately will be too much for Northampton Town on the day.

So I’m taking BRADFORD CITY to put their Capital One Cup experience to maximum use & I believe they are well worth backing to get the job done & hopefully with a few goals along the way, Nakhi Wells to be the star of the show once again.
Match Betting Recommendations:
Outright Match Result & Correct Score options:- BRADFORD CITY to win 2-1/3-1
First Goalscorer/Players to score anytime:- Wells/Hanson/Thompson

Predictions for F.A. Cup 5th Round, Championship, League 1 & League 2 matches from Tuesday 26th February to Wednesday 27th February

Predictions for F.A. Cup 5th Round, Championship, League 1 & League 2 matches from Tuesday 26th February to Wednesday 27th February

At this time of the season the football action is relentless with league & cup action seemingly on a daily basis and that’s certainly the case again this week with fascinating looking action set to take place in the F.A. Cup, Championship, League 1 & League 2.

I’ve had a good look at the midweek fixtures lists &  here are my predictions on how I see the games going & hopefully you find them useful in some way if you are thinking of a potential punt on the football:

F.A. Cup 5th Round predictions:

EVERTON to beat Oldham 3-0/3-1
CHELSEA to beat Middlesbrough 2-1/3-1

Everton were absolutely gutted to concede a 95th minute equaliser against Oldham which forced this replay that they certainly didn’t want but I’m expecting David Moyes men to make no mistake here & do a thoroughly professional job to win through with a degree of comfort on home soil.

Chelsea & Rafa Benitez will not find it easy up at Middlesbrough as I’m sure their players & the local fans will be up for their biggest game for some time but ultimately I’m expecting Chelsea’s superior quality to have the edge and earn themselves a quarter final tie away at Manchester United.

Championship predictions:

LEICESTER CITY to beat Blackburn 2-0/2-1
BOLTON to beat Peterborough 2-0/2-1
BURNLEY to beat Huddersfield 2-0/2-1

Three very important Championship games in prospect here with all 6 teams having very strong motivations to fight hard & win the points so caution when punting has to be the first message.

That said I do believe that all three home sides LEICESTER CITY, BOLTON & BURNLEY are well worth supporting to make the most of home advantage in what will be competitive games & take the points.

League 1 predictions:

BOURNEMOUTH to beat Coventry 2-0/2-1
CARLISLE to beat Walsall 2-0/2-1
COLCHESTER vs YEOVIL DRAW 1-1/2-2
CRAWLEY vs BRENTFORD DRAW 1-1/2-2
CREWE to beat Hartlepool 2-0/2-1
MK DONS to beat Portsmouth 2-1/3-1
PRESTON vs OLDHAM DRAW 1-1/2-2
SCUNTHORPE to beat Stevenage 2-0/2-1
SHEFFIELD UNITED to beat Leyton Orient 2-0/2-1
SHREWSBURY vs DONCASTER DRAW 1-1/2-2
SWINDON to beat Bury 3-0/3-1
TRANMERE to beat Notts County 2-0/2-1

I have to say it looks set to be a very interesting night in League 1 with some really interesting looking matches and with everything to play for.

The headline fixture in League 1 looks likely to be SHEFFIELD UNITED at home to Leyton Orient and I think Danny Wilson’s men are worth a punt to get another vital win in their push for promotion although Leyton Orient will not make it easy for them.

SWINDON will be rated as many punters banker for the night at home to Bury & I have to agree with that, it will be a big shock if Swindon don’t win & win comfortably.

I also fancy  BOURNEMOUTH, TRANMERE & CREWE to get important wins on the boards as well.

League 2 predictions:

WIMBLEDON vs PLYMOUTH DRAW 1-1/2-2
BURTON vs MORECAMBE DRAW 1-1/2-2
CHESTERFIELD to beat Aldershot 2-0/2-1
FLEETWOOD vs CHELTENHAM DRAW 1-1/2-2
GILLINGHAM to beat Oxford 2-0/2-1
PLYMOUTH vs OXFORD DRAW 1-1/2-2
PORT VALE to beat Exeter 2-0/3-0
NORTHAMPTON vs BRILSTOL ROVERS DRAW 1-1/2-2
ROTHERHAM UNITED to beat York City 2-1/3-1
TORQUAY to beat Wycombe 2-0/2-1
SOUTHEND to beat Barnet 2-0/2-1
BRADFORD to beat Dagenham 2-0/2-1

Judged on form & the league table in Division 2 then this fixture lists does look home friendly with the bigger, better teams at home & I’m expecting the likes of PORT VALE, GILLINGHAM, ROTHERHAM, TORQUAY & CHESTERFIELD to get home wins.

The other matches look seriously competitive to me & very tight to call with scoring draws very tempting options at value odds
